Engineering sustainable and durable paving materials – 10th Eurobitume-Academia webinar
‘Engineering sustainable and durable paving materials through chemo-mechanical optimisation’ was the title ofEurobitume’s 10th academia webinar, which was held in partnership with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands.
Delivered by TU Delft’s Associate Professor of Chemomechanics of Infrastructure Materials, Dr Katerina Varveri – a leading contributor to the development of recommendations and standards for fingerprinting paving binders – this interesting online webinar focused upon environmental ageing and the relationship between binder chemistry, rheology and mechanical performance.
Dr Varveri discussed the discrepancies between laboratory ageing protocols and actual field ageing, and explained that in-depth profiling studies revealed the difference between surface and sub-surface ageing intensity.
She also advised that spectroscopic techniques can be a good indicator of long-term performance and stated that her research has established a good correlation between accelerated laboratory ageing protocols and real-time ageing in the field.
As with previous Eurobitume-Academia webinars, following the presentation there was a very lively discussion and Q&A session.
Eurobitume members will soon be able to access a recording of this academia webinar on the Training / Academia Webinars page of the Eurobitume Intranet site, where recordings of previous webinars are already available.
The next Eurobitume-Academia webinar will be delivered by Professor Gabriele Tebaldi from Università di Parma on 14th January 2025.
