Performance-based characterisation – 9th Eurobitume-Academia webinar

Held in partnership with Universita Politecnica delle Marche (UPdM) in Ancona, Italy, Eurobitume’s 9th academia webinar focused upon the performance-based characterisation of bio-binders for sustainable asphalt mixtures.

Montage grue – Notre-Dame de Paris

On 19th September, Professor Francesco Canestrari from UPdM’s Department of Construction, Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICEA) lead the webinar, which was attended by nearly 40 people from member organisations, Eurobitume and invited guests.

Professor Canestrari began the webinar by talking about striking a balance between sustainability and mobility, after which he discussed the classification of biomaterials and the importance of using the correct terminology.

He then provided an informative introduction to biomaterials and followed this by sharing extensive details about three pieces of research he and his team at the university had undertaken:

  1. Fundamental properties of bio-modified bitumens: including ageing, adhesion and performance in asphalt.
  2. Lignin as a sustainable asphalt / bitumen modifier, including anti-oxidant properties, and the practical limit of lignin concentration.
  3. Looking at biomaterials in PmBs.

Following the presentation there was a very lively discussion and Q&A session.

Eurobitume members will soon be able to access a recording of this academia webinar from the Training / Academia Webinars page of the Eurobitume Intranet site, where recordings of the eight previous webinars are already available.
