Very informative and clearly presented” and “(an) excellent beginners guide” are two other comments received from the more than 65 people who attended what was Eurobitume’s ninth educational webinar.

This webinar was carefully developed to give non-technical bitumen industry stakeholders a good, basic understanding about the chemistry of bitumen, what it is and the composition of the main grades of bitumen.

Webinar presenter Dr Ian Lancaster, who is Eurobitume Technical Lead, also explained that bitumen – which is a very versatile, sustainable construction and engineering material – has more than 100,000 different chemical components but can be separated into four fractions:

  • Saturates
  • Aromatics
  • Resins
  • Asphaltenes

The webinar also explained the effects of ageing on the chemical composition of bitumen and how bitumen chemistry influences adhesion.

Ian added that a great reference publication about bitumen is called ‘The bitumen industry – a global perspective (IS-230 4th edition)’, which can be downloaded for free from the Eurobitume website by clicking here.

As with the preceding eight educational webinars, a recording of the Bitumen Chemistry webinar is available from the EDUCATION AND TRAINING / webinars page of the Eurobitume website.

Save the Date for next open-to-all webinar – Wednesday 10th September
