Swiss Bitumen Day 2025 – A Successful Industry Gathering in Bern

Eurobitume is delighted to share that this year’s edition of the Swiss Bitumen Day was a great success. On the 25th of September 2025, around 90 participants gathered at Kursaal in Bern for the Swiss Bitumen Day 2025. The event, organised by Eurobitume, offered a full set of expert presentations and discussions, focused on environmental sustainability, technical development, and practical solutions in the bitumen and asphalt sector.

Reflecting Switzerland’s multilingual context, all presentations were delivered in German or French, with simultaneous interpretation ensuring an open and inclusive exchange among participants.
The programme was presented by Anja Sörensen, Eurobitume’s focal point for Switzerland and Germany, and HSE Lead, and was divided into two main blocks.

The first session addressed environmental sustainability, including an in-depth presentation of Eurobitume’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) 4.0 by Brice Delaporte Eurobitume’s Sustainability Lead. This was followed by insights into assessment methodologies from Austria and Germany presented by Michael Gruber from TU Wien and Tanja Kessel from TU Braunschweig, and a final presentation focusing on a  practical case study comparing the environmental impacts of Mastic Asphalt and SDA, held by Joël Lenk from Nibuxs Sàrl. Together, these presentations provided participants with a clear understanding of how data, tools, and methodologies can be applied to address sustainability across the sector.

The second part concentrated on challenges and solutions from a practical point of view, with a particular emphasis on experiences from Switzerland, France, and Germany. Structured as a practice-oriented session, it featured contributions from renowned experts from academia and across the bitumen and asphalt industry. Aybike Öngel from FH Bern presented the new VSS Guide on Mastic Asphalt, while Marc Wählen from Bauindustrieverband NRW and Brice Delaporte from Eurobitume discussed approaches to lowering asphalt temperatures in Germany and France, respectively. The final presentation, delivered by Martins Zaumanis from EMPA, shared insights on the use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement, bridging the gap between research and practical implementation.

Each presentation was followed by time for questions and discussion, encouraging active engagement between speakers and participants. The event concluded with a networking lunch, offering attendees the opportunity to continue exchanging experiences, and strengthening collaboration.

Eurobitume extends its sincere thanks to all speakers, participants, and organisers including translators who contributed to the success of the Swiss Bitumen Day 2025, reinforcing the cooperative spirit that drives continuous improvement and innovation across the European bitumen and asphalt community.
