Eurobitume Biomaterials terminology document gains recognition and adoption at national level
Eurobitume is pleased to highlight the growing impact and adoption of its guidance document, Recommended Terminology for Biomaterials in Bituminous Binders, which is increasingly being recognised and adopted by national road authorities.

Published following a joint work by Eurobitume’s Technical Committee, Health, safety and environment (HSE) Committee, and Bitumen Sustainability Steering Group, the guidance document was developed to address a clear gap: the absence of a common, authoritative reference describing biomaterials used in bituminous binders. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature and reflecting the collective expertise of Eurobitume members, the document provides much-needed clarity in an area of increasing innovation and sustainability-driven development.
Since its publication, the document has proven to be a valuable reference for public authorities and industry stakeholders seeking clarity on the definition and use of biomaterials in bituminous binders. In particular, Transport Infrastructure Ireland has now incorporated the Eurobitume terminology directly into its product specifications, marking an important step in aligning technical language and expectations at national level.
In addition, Eurobitume has been invited to engage with the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT), which intends to use the terminology as the basis for producing an advice note for its members across the UK local authority road network. The document has also been adopted by National Highways, the body responsible for the UK’s strategic road network, further reinforcing its relevance at a national level. More recently, the British Board of Agrément (BBA), an independent UK certification body, formally adopted the document into its guidelines.
Its growing use by national and local authorities highlights Eurobitume’s role in sharing best practices, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and acting as a trusted technical reference.
