Eurobitume sets out the decarbonisation pathway for Europe’s bitumen industry

Eurobitume has just published its Decarbonisation Roadmap for Bitumen, outlining how the European bitumen industry plans to contribute to decarbonising road construction and asphalt production in Europe.

The roadmap defines a collective industry ambition and identifies a pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with bitumen production by 73% by 2050, compared with 1990 levels. It also highlights the importance of collaboration across the value chain and supportive policy frameworks to help enable the transition.

The roadmap evaluates the potential of various decarbonisation levers across the production chain, including the electrification of equipment, the use of low-carbon fuels and process efficiency improvements. It also recognises the challenges associated with the transition, notably those arising from a globally distributed supply chain, which requires close collaboration with upstream partners.

The publication represents the first phase of Eurobitume’s broader sustainability roadmap. It aims to support informed discussions on the decarbonisation of road infrastructure among policymakers, industry stakeholders and the technical community.

The roadmap was officially presented yesterday during Eurobitume’s E&E event on 11 June 2026 and will continue to be promoted at industry events. An open-to-all webinar is planned for 9 September 2026, during which participants will learn more about the roadmap and its key findings.
