Eurobitume shares its latest LCA study on modified bitumen
Highlighting the importance of assessing the environmental impact of road pavements.

On 7 October 2026, Anja Sörensen represented Eurobitume at the SITEB talk “The Application of the LCA Method to Asphalt Pavements”, held during Asphaltica in Bologna, Italy. Asphaltica is a key meeting point for Italy’s road construction sector, bringing together companies, associations, and professionals to exchange knowledge on new technologies, industry developments, and sustainability.
Organised by SITEB, the Italian national association representing the bitumen and asphalt road sector, the session brought together Italian and international industry and academic experts to discuss the role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in road infrastructure. Discussions covered a range of topics, including the opportunities and challenges of LCA methodologies and their practical application to asphalt pavements.
During the session, Anja Sörensen presented “The New LCA Study on Modified Bitumen: Results and Perspectives”, sharing Eurobitume’s latest work on bitumen’s environmental profile. Building on Eurobitume’s LCA 4.0, the study provides additional information on the environmental impacts of 2 typical grades of SBS-modified bitumen. The study is available in the Publications section of the website.
The presentation also explored the benefits of polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) in pavement design, examining, for example, how improved fatigue resistance can help optimise pavement performance over time. This highlighted the importance of considering both environmental impacts and pavement performance when assessing infrastructure sustainability.
Eurobitume’s participation gave it an opportunity to share its expertise with key stakeholders from the Italian road construction sector and contributed to the broader exchange of knowledge on Life Cycle Assessment and more sustainable road pavements.
