Eurobitume presents its decarbonisation roadmap at NAB in 2026

Eurobitume presented its Decarbonisation Roadmap for Bitumen at NABin 2026, the Norwegian Asphalt Association’s annual seminar. Olivier Moglia, Chair of Eurobitume’s Bitumen Sustainability Steering Group (BSSG), represented the association, outlining the roadmap’s key findings and opportunities for coordinated action across the bitumen supply chain.
The roadmap identifies a pathway to reduce the cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emissions intensity of bitumen produced in Europe by 73% by 2050 compared with 1990, from 823 to 223 kg CO₂ equivalent per tonne. The analysis estimates a 36% reduction between 1990 and 2023, with a further 58% reduction possible between 2023 and 2050. These figures cover emissions from crude oil extraction through refinery-gate storage.
Key levers include electrification, low-carbon fuels, process efficiency and methane emissions reduction. With crude oil extraction accounting for around 70% of the 2023 footprint, progress requires upstream collaboration, supportive policies, investment and access to low-carbon energy.
Through its participation in NABin 2026, Eurobitume continues to share its decarbonisation roadmap with national industry stakeholders, encouraging dialogue and cooperation to support the bitumen sector’s decarbonisation.
