Advancing sustainability through evidence and knowledge sharing

To mark Sustainability Day, Eurobitume looks back on the publications and knowledge-sharing activities delivered in 2026 to improve understanding of bitumen’s environmental performance and the opportunities to reduce GHG emissions.
From its Decarbonisation Roadmap to new life cycle assessment data for polymer-modified bitumen (PMB), these resources support an evidence-based and proactive approach to sustainability across the industry.
“With the publication of its Decarbonisation Roadmap and LCA for polymer-modified bitumen in 2026, Eurobitume has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and set out a credible and ambitious pathway to significantly reduce GHG emissions from European bitumen production,” said Hervé Millet, Director General of Eurobitume.
A pathway towards lower emissions
Launched in June, Eurobitume’s Decarbonisation Roadmap for Bitumen sets out a pathway to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions intensity of European bitumen production by 73% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels.
Building on the reductions already achieved, the Roadmap examines the contributions of different decarbonisation levers and the conditions needed to support their implementation. The full report and Executive Summary provide a shared reference for understanding the pathway and its underlying assumptions.
To present the findings and encourage discussion, Eurobitume held a dedicated webinar in September. The recording remains available for those who would like to revisit the presentation or explore the Roadmap in more detail.
Strengthening the environmental evidence base
Eurobitume also published its life cycle assessment for PMB. The study provides environmental data for PMB production, complements Eurobitume’s existing LCA for paving-grade bitumen, and supports assessments of asphalt mixtures and road infrastructure.
A dedicated webinar in April presented the study and its findings, helping participants understand the data and their impact in more holistic environmental assessments.
Making knowledge accessible
Throughout the year, Eurobitume has supported these publications with webinars, presentations at industry events and communications explaining their key findings. These activities help connect technical evidence with the people who use it, supporting informed discussions on decarbonisation and environmental performance.
Eurobitume will continue building on this work through research, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, supporting the industry’s progress toward a more sustainable future.
