Sustainability
Bitumen is a top construction material that supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 by promoting resilient infrastructure and sustainable industrialization. Its 100% reusability in road applications and durability make it ideal for long-lasting infrastructure projects. Constantly evolving technology around bitumen allows us to maximize its benefits for future-oriented projects.
Bitumen is one of the best construction materials that can directly offer help towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation).
It offers 100% reusability in road applications, as well as being a durable material providing options for longer-lasting solutions for end applications. It can be used repeatedly, making it the perfect choice for use in future oriented infrastructure projects. The technology around bitumen is constantly evolving, and so are we, to be able to maximise the benefits of the inherent properties of this material.

In 2022, almost 36 million tonnes of asphalt were recycled or re-used in Europe. Quantities recycled directly back into road surfaces vary from country to country but can be as high as 90-100%, according to the European Asphalt Pavement Association.
We have conducted bitumen Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) studies for paving grade bitumen: a cradle to gate study covering the extraction of crude oil; transport to Europe, including pipeline and ship transport; manufacturing bitumen in a complex refinery; and hot storage of the product.
