Eurobitume highlights the role of PMB at leading Dutch infrastructure event
To promote the important role polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) can play within the infrastructure sector in a modern, sustainability-aware circular economy, Eurobitume Technical Lead Dr Ian Lancaster was an expert speaker at the recent (June 24-25, 2026) CROW Infradagen 2026 event in the Netherlands.

Organised by CROW, the Dutch leading not-for-profit knowledge and standardisation platform for infrastructure, mobility and public space, in collaboration with the National Platform for Sustainable Road Pavement (NPDW), CROW Infradagen 2026 took place at Congrescentrum B&I in Harderwijk.
The annual event, themed “Time for action: the infrastructure sector on the road to 2050”, brings together representatives from Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch road and water authority, along with officials, researchers and industry professionals from across the infrastructure sector to share expertise, research and project developments.
At CROW Infradagen 2026, a packed audience was present when Ian explained how the presence of PMB can make asphalt pavements more sustainable by:
- improving durability and resilience;
- increasing resistance to deformation, rutting and cracking;
- reducing susceptibility to the wider temperature variations increasingly associated with climate change; and
- reducing the need for maintenance.
Equally importantly from a sustainability perspective, Ian emphasised PMB recyclability and explained that it can be incorporated into new asphalt mixtures used for recycled asphalt pavements RAP).
PMB’s strong sustainability credentials during the pavement’s use phase were among the reasons Ian also called for a “whole life” approach to be adopted when calculating, for example, embodied carbon.
