New Eurobitume position statement highlights the recyclability of asphalt containing PMB

“Recycled polymer-modified asphalt should not be recognised as a constraint, but as a strategic asset for sustainable road construction,” states Eurobitume’s newly published position statement on the recycling of asphalt containing polymer-modified bitumen (PMB).

The new position statement confirms that the polymers used in PMB do not prevent the asphalt from being recycled; rather, they enhance its future value. Aged PMB binders can be successfully incorporated into new asphalt mixtures using standard recycling processes and appropriate quality-control measures.

The paper also highlights the wider sustainability benefits of PMB. By improving pavement durability and resistance to common forms of distress, such as rutting and fatigue cracking, PMB can extend pavement service life and reduce maintenance needs. This can lower demand for virgin raw materials and reduced lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with material production, transport and construction activities.

Research and practical experience also demonstrate that reclaimed asphalt containing PMB can be used in new mixtures, including at high recycling rates, without compromising performance. The valuable properties introduced by the polymers can therefore be retained and used in subsequent pavement applications.

Eurobitume supports the continued and expanded use of PMB in asphalt and its full integration into circular economy and sustainability policies. Recognising the role of PMB in extending pavement life and enabling effective recycling is essential to delivering durable, cost-effective and environmentally responsible transport infrastructure across Europe.
