Eurobitume publishes revised Emergency Safety Showers, Safe Delivery and Safe Loading of Bitumen guidance documents
The safe handling of bitumen throughout the supply chain is a cornerstone of Eurobitume’s mission and work. Central to this commitment is the development of clear, practical industry guidelines and standards to continuously improve safety within the industry.

As part of this ongoing effort, Eurobitume has released three revised guidance documents: Guidance on Emergency Safety Showers (2nd edition), Guide to the Safe Delivery of Bitumen (3rd edition), and Guide for Safe Loading of Bitumen. Each has been developed to reflect current regulations, best practice recommendations, and other relevant guidance documents on safe handling, while also being enhanced with additional content for greater clarity.
The updated Guidance on Emergency Safety Showers replaces the 2016 version. In addition, it now integrates our recently published statement on activities in case of inoperable safety showers and includes new visuals to improve, understanding. The document also reinforces that safety showers are an essential safety measure that needs to be in place and operable where hot bitumen is handled.
The revised Guide to the Safe Delivery of Bitumen also replaces the earlier version published in 2018. It provides detailed recommendations for the safe handling of bitumen throughout the entire delivery process and includes important updates on the safe working capacities of tanks, supported by visuals. As before, this guidance is available both as a Standard European version (translated into several languages) and as a number of country or regional versions, each with appendices covering local or regional requirements.
The updated Guide for Safe Loading of Bitumen has now been published as publicly available. Previously limited to Eurobitume members, the document has been revised to reflect current regulations and best practices and is now accessible to all across the industry.
Together, these revised documents further strengthen Eurobitume’s extensive suite of HSE resources and are freely available through the HSE and Publications sections of our website. They reflect Eurobitume’s vision of supporting the safe and responsible use of bitumen across the supply chain.
