Eurobitume provides expert input at UK stakeholder event

Eurobitume focal person for the UK, Dr Ian Lancaster, provided expert input at this year’s Sharing Best Practice event for local authority highway engineers in the UK.

Held on 13th November and organised by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA), a partnership between Eurobitume and the Mineral Products Association (MPA), Sharing Best Practice 2025 attracted a record number of online delegates from local authorities across England, Wales and Scotland.

Key features of Ian’s scene-setting presentation about how climate change is affecting our approach to asset management were:

  • How extremes weather conditions can affect road pavements
  • more rutting in summer
    more cracking in winter
  • increased deterioration due to flooding and freezing
  • Mitigation / adaptation strategies
  • greater use of PmB (and higher-performance PmB) to resist temperature extremes
  • porous / pervious design to manage floodwater
  • lower application temperature to reduce energy demand and emissions during mixing and laying

Ian’s introduction was followed by case studies from Transport Scotland, Transport for Wales and National Highways – which operates and maintains England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads.

He was then also one of the experts in a lively panel discussion on “improving durability” chaired by AIA Chair David Giles.

Ian’s presentation, along with all those from this year’s Sharing Best Practice event, is available to view at: Stakeholder engagement – AIA The Asphalt Industry Alliance
