Eurobitume unveils decarbonisation roadmap for the European bitumen industry

 Brussels, 16th June 2026

Eurobitume, the European Bitumen Association, has published its Decarbonisation Roadmap, outlining how the bitumen industry plans to contribute to the decarbonisation of road construction and asphalt production in Europe.

The roadmap defines a collective industry ambition and identifies a pathway to reduce by 73% (vs 1990) the greenhouse gas emissions associated with bitumen production by 2050. It also highlights the importance of collaboration across the value chain and supportive policy frameworks to help enable the transition.

Bitumen plays an essential role in European road infrastructure and mobility. As the road construction sector advances its sustainability objectives, Eurobitume and its members are committed to contributing to broader European climate ambitions through a pragmatic and realistic transition pathway.

The roadmap evaluates the potential of various decarbonisation levers at each step of the production chain, including the electrification of equipment, the use of low-carbon fuels, and process efficiency improvements. It also recognises the challenges linked to the transition, notably due to a globally distributed supply chain, which requires close collaboration with upstream partners.

The publication represents the first phase of Eurobitume’s broader sustainability roadmap and aims to support informed discussions on the decarbonisation of road infrastructure among policymakers, industry stakeholders and the technical community.

“This roadmap marks an important milestone for Eurobitume and our members,” said Sergio Bovo, President of Eurobitume. “It demonstrates our industry’s commitment to contributing to the decarbonisation of Europe while recognising the practical realities and challenges associated with the transition.” Hervé Millet, Director General of Eurobitume, added: “Developing this roadmap shows our collective members’ engagement in supplying European road infrastructure with increasingly climate-friendly materials. We hope this work will contribute to a constructive dialogue with policymakers and stakeholders across the whole value chain”

The roadmap was officially presented during Eurobitume’s E&E event on 11 June 2026 and will continue to be promoted at industry events. Additionally, an open-to-all webinar is planned for 9 September 2026; participants can register here

About Eurobitume

Established in 1969, Eurobitume is the voice of the bitumen industry in Europe and aims to be the first reference for bitumen in Europe.

On behalf of its members, Eurobitume works to educate and promote the efficient, economic, effective, safe and sustainable use of refined bitumen in road, industrial and building applications.

Based on proven data, Eurobitume provides information and guidance on technical, health, safety and environmental matters, supporting best practice across the sector.

Eurobitume also creates a positive image and an adequate regulatory environment for sustained bitumen demand by communicating the product’s benefits to key audiences.

This work is enabled by our network of experts across five committees and Steering Groups, each made up of specialists from member companies and operating through an intensive work programme to deliver guidance and support for members and their customers:

  • Bitumen and Sustainability Steering Group (BSSG)
  • Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE) Committee
  • Public Relations and Communications (PRC) Committee
  • Safe Handling Sub-Committee (SHBSC)
  • Technical Committee

These committees research the scientific and technical issues relating to the handling, application and long-term use of bitumen; produce relevant data for regulators; and provide expert advice and practical guidelines to inform best practice throughout the bitumen industry in Europe.
